starting school
The Foundation Stage
The Foundation Stage describes the period between three and five years old, when children are learning from play, creative activities, socializing ith others, and learning more formall too. For the youngest children the nursery is open part-time in the morning and is called Foundation 1. Once children start full-time school in Reception they are described as Foundation 2. Both stages occupy the same large Foundation Unit so that their progress and development is coherent and well-planned.
Starting in the nursery: Foundation Stage 1
Children can start in the nursery (Foundation 1) after their third birthday, although this does depend upon demand and the availability of places which might vary quite a lot from term to term. Starting arrangements can be very flexible. Some children need to begin with short visits to the nursery accompanied by a parent; others are already familiar with the nursery and can't wait to come! The Foundation Unit staff will discuss this with you fully.
There are a range of activities which enable a child to develop intellectually, socially and emotionally. There are areas for drawing and painting, craftwork, sand and water play, role play, building and for stories and relaxation. There is also a secure outdoor activity area, toilets and a cloakroom.
Starting in Reception: Foundation Stage 2
If your child has spent some time in the nursery then starting school full-time in Reception (also called Foundation 2) is usually quite easy. By the time they move into reception our nursery children have already become involved in many school activities and are familiar with the school and its daily life.
MOVING YOUR CHILD FROM OUR NURSERY TO OUR RECEPTION IS THE BEST WAY YOU CAN ENSURE A GOOD START TO YOUR CHILD'S FULL-TIME EDUCATION.
The term before your child starts school you will be invited to a meeting for new parents. You will meet me, the class teacher, see the classroom and the school and discuss all the arrangements for a happy and positive start to school. If you cannot make this meeting then individual arrangements can be made for you.
The Foundation range of activities continue and make for continuity between nursery and reception and throughout the infant classes. More formal activities such as reading and writing and using workbooks begin to be used. You will keep in regular contact with the teacher, so that you have a clear idea of your child's progress.
Older children starting school are very welcome and well-looked after.
