The National Curriculum and the Foundation Curriculum
All children older than Reception must study the National Curriculum. There are 3 core subjects, Maths, English and Science. There are seven foundation subjects, ICT, DT, History, Geography, Art, Music and PE. Religious Education and PSHCE are also taught. Explanations of these titles and subjects can be found in the following pages.
Children in the Nursery and the Reception year form the Foundation Stage of learning. These children follow a different curriculum of learning experiences based on five broad areas of learning; literacy, numeracy, knowledge of the world, physical, artistic, and social/personal. These children are at a very special age and need a learning day that includes much learning through play and socializing, mixed with short bursts of more formal times, perhaps for story, games, or learning about words or numbers.
Throughout school we teach a curriculum which is broad, balanced and exciting. Basic skills are covered in a well planned and varied framework. Obviously the school has to follow the requirements laid down by law or government regarding teaching and learning, but we do try to fit the curriculum to the child, not necessarily the other way round. We want to develop each child's intellectual, creative, spiritual, social and aesthetic potential to the full.
The curriculum is the same for girls and boys, or for any other group. No child is denied curriculum and other activities because of gender, race or religion or disability. We try hard to ensure that all of our pupils are given appropriate attention and opportunity.
