School curriculum & standards of achievement

St James' School takes children with all kinds of abilities and needs. For a small school we have a wide variety of children. We have many children who are extremely able; we also have several children who have special educational needs; and of course we have a lot of children who come somewhere in between.

We perform above national expectations in National Curriculum Tests; and well above national expectations for the most able children. Details of the most recent tests are in the appendix. You should understand that statistics can play strange tricks in small schools because often the numbers of children being tested are too small to provide meaningful figures. In fact test results can vary widely from year to year depending on the nature of the children, even though it is the same teacher using the same (or even better) methods.

Our targets for Year 6 are published each year in the Governors' Annual Report.
